At only 17, snowboarder Maddie Mastro is one of the youngest athletes to represent Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, and she’s become one of the team’s rising halfpipe stars. The way Mastro delivers fresh, pro-level finishes, it should be no surprise that the young teen’s go-to music and TV shows are equally as refreshing and refined.
The California native shared with EW some of her “fave” music and shows that help her “get going,” as well as those that clear her mind before any competition. Mastro drops into the halfpipe finals tonight alongside Chloe Kim, Kelly Clark, and Arielle Gold, starting at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
by Taylor Swift
“I have playlists for different mindsets or for different situations. I have one with a lot of pop, dance, and catchy songs that I can sing along to. There are others where I have rock, alternative or indie music. I’m a pretty big Taylor [Swift] fan. Honestly, when [Reputation] first came out, I wasn’t too sure about the album, but after listening to it a few times, it’s like the best thing ever. It took me a while to come around but once I did, I realized it is actually pretty good. ‘End Game‘ is probably my favorite song from that album,” she said.
2. The Bachelor
“I do have a guilt reality TV show and that’s The Bachelor, if it’s considered that, sadly. I just recently found a new love for it. It’s almost a comedy for me, it’s awesome — I love it. It is very funny, you feel like you’re in L.A. with all of them; it’s amazing.”
3. “Mess Around” by Cage the Elephant
“This is currently my fave song, I enjoy all their other hits but I like the lyrics in ‘Mess Around.’ It talks about a blonde-haired girl from California who doesn’t mess around and I kind of relate to that. I like to think that I’m a blonde girl from California who doesn’t mess around.”
4. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
“This is my favorite book of all time. It’s one of those books that you feel part of it while you’re reading it. You sit down and literally don’t get back up until you’ve finished the book. It’s very well written and so easy to get into.”
5. “The Record Player Song” by Daisy the Great
“Currently, I’m obsessed with Daisy the Great’s ‘The Record Player Song.’ I found this band in a very stalker-ish way because I found this band from watching a Netflix original series. The singer is like the best friend of one of the actresses in the show and I just became obsessed with them. It’s such a catchy all-girls song and I’m just obsessed with the people that are in the band, it’s so fun.” [Editor’s note: That show appears to be Atypical.]
“I watch a lot of Netflix and it tends to be The Office or Parks and Recreation, those are my go-to shows. I love those shows because of the type of humor and you can just always laugh about it. It’s something I constantly have on, it’s just a nice thing to watch, relax, laugh, and go to The Office for a bit. Especially when I’m about to compete, I always watch these shows just to relax and have a laugh or two. They help me relax for contests when I’m feeling pretty stressed. I’ve probably almost watched all the Netflix shows, honestly. I’ve watched Stranger Things a couple times through. It’s a good show. I’m a pretty big fan.”
